Today In (Our) Anime History For February 16th, 2002

Take a brief step back in time to an anime fandom that was.

A piece I’m kicking around a bit and will probably flesh out and change more as time goes on is to look back in (our) anime history and the things we’ve covered over the years because, for some insane reason, I’ve been doing this since 1998. What I’m thinking of is just doing from the twenty-year mark past as the main piece but also providing a few tidbits about the years prior

For Example:

Twenty years ago in 2002, we started to get word on how the premium edition of Evangelion was going to be done as it was in the heyday of the metal boxes – which I still miss being a thing. We had a lot of KatsuCon news hitting as well from Right Stuf such as learning how the Kare Kano release was going to be done and just how well Boogiepop Phantom was selling for them.

In 2001, it was a quiet Friday for domestic news and we focused on doing lots of cover updates, such as some Pioneer titles finally getting DVD releases like Moldiver and Kishin Corps.

In 2000, we got our first look at the Ranma 1/2 OVA box set while Central Park Media talked about doing a Lodoss TV box set, which would arrive sometime after all the VHS single-volume releases were out. The transition stage in getting DVD releases done was not easy back then and a lot of shows were getting VHS releases but still no word on DVDs, whether because of rights issues or just the way they were handling planning.

In 1999, things were still slim throughout a lot of this year but the big news this day AnimEigo had out more information on their first two Urusei Yatsura box sets and the OVA and movies plans. We also began the first of our eight-volume release run of views on Tenchi in Tokyo.
