‘The Heike Story’ Debuts New Trailer Ahead Of Japanese Broadcast

Biwa plays for a shirabyoshi dancer.

Funimation previously picked up the fall 2021 title from Science SARU with The Heike Story and it’s definitely unusual in how this is coming out. The series is scheduled for a January 12th, 2022 debut in Japan as part of the +Ultra block on Fuji TV but Funimation began streaming it on their service back on September 15th, 2021 along with service in Japan.

With that in mind, the Japanese side has now brought out a new trailer to promote the show, especially since they do have the whole thing available to pull from.

The series is directed by Naoko Yamada based on the scripts overseen by Reiko Yoshida. The character designs come from Fumiko Takano and are adapted by Takashi Kojima.

The Japanese cast includes Aoi Yūki as Biwa, Saori Hayami as Taira no Tokuko, Takahiro Sakurai as Taira no Shigemori, and Tesshō Genda as Taira no Kiyomori.

The English dub was directed by Mike McFarland with a cast that includes Xanthe Huynh as Biwa, John Gremillion as Shigemori, Suzie Yeung as Tokuko, Frank Todaro as Kiyomori, Garrett Schenck as Go-Shirakawa, Anjali Kunapaneni as Sukemori, Randy Pearlman as Tokitada, and Douglas Gill as Koremori.

Plot Concept: A young orphan named Biwa is taken in by the powerful Taira Clan—also known as the Heike—after their leader witnesses her extraordinary psychic abilities.

Unfortunately, what she predicts is a future of bloodshed, violence, and civil war. Inspired by the 12th-century epic tale Heike Monogatari.
