3 min read
A second season is guaranteed.

With a second season for Wheel of Time from Amazon Prime Video greenlit already and a November 19th, 2021 release set for the first season, the property got some attention at their NYCC panel this weekend. The show got a new clip released that works the arrival of Lan and Moiraine at the inn where we see a few other prominent characters. It’s more of a stage-setting kind of clip that gives us a feel for the world and the characters in a slow and subtle way.

Additionally, we learned that Ceara Coveney (The Amazing World of Emma), Natasha O’Keeffe (Peaky Blinders) and Meera Syal (Broadchurch) have all joined the production. Only Coveney had her character listed, that of Elayne Trakand, as the other two will be series regulars to be revealed later.

“The belief Amazon Studios and Sony Pictures Television have shown in The Wheel of Time has been incredible to see throughout the entire process of making this show. Getting a second season order before the first season has even premiered is such a vote of confidence in the work we are doing and the property itself, and we couldn’t be happier to be able to continue to live and work in the world Robert Jordan created,” said Rafe Judkins, showrunner, executive producer, and writer on the adaptation. “This property is one I’ve loved since I was a teenager, and seeing it brought to life with the resources to make it truly worthy of what’s on the page is something I can’t wait for the other fans of the books to see. And Season 2 just keeps expanding the world we built in Season 1.”

The leading cast includes:

  • Rosamund Pike as Moiraine
  • Josha Stradowski as Rand al’Thor
  • Marcus Rutherford as Perrin Aybara
  • Zoë Robins as Nynaeve al’Meara
  • Barney Harris as Mat Cauthon (S1)
  • Donal Finn as Mat Cauthon (S2)
  • Madeleine Madden as Egwene al’Vere
  • Daniel Henney as al’Lan Mandragoran
  • Michael McElhatton as Tam al’Thor

Rafe Judkins is serving as a showrunner, executive producer, and writer on the adaptation. Judkins looks to be quite the fan of the original work, which is a big plus, and has some solid TV experience working on Chuck and Hemlock Grove as well as Agents of SHIELD.

Sony Pictures Television will be producing it along with Red Eagle Entertainment and Radar Pictures. Shopping the project to networks is the next step while firming up production plans.

Plot concept: Set in a sprawling, epic world where magic exists and only certain women are allowed to access it, the story follows Moiraine, a member of the incredibly powerful all-female organization called the Aes Sedai, as she arrives in the small town of Two Rivers. There, she embarks on a dangerous, world-spanning journey with five young men and women, one of whom is prophesied to be the Dragon Reborn, who will either save or destroy humanity.
