The Weekly TV Discussion Post For September 26th, 2021

So. Much. TV.

The month of September is just about done and its crazy the shows that we’ve been getting and the things coming up as it’s so chock full of really interesting works that I’m excited about We’re working through a couple of ongoing series that we’re reviewing with Stargirl, Star Trek: Lower Decks, What If…? and Foundation. We’ve wrapped up on Loki and Star Wars: The Bad Batch. We’re also digging into a lot of other shows, wrapping up some things and starting up a few others – or at least getting closer to start dates for some projects.

We’re keeping up with some of our favorites like EvilSee, and Ted Lasso, and a whole lot more as well.

Current Netflix queue:  Rebecca, Cool Hand Luke, The Dig, Gunpowder Milkshake

HBO Max queue: David Bowie: The Last Five Years, Greenland, Zack Snyders Justice League, Bright Young Things

Hulu queue: Das BootSwing ThingsI Kill Giants

With this week, a lot of our evening viewing where we really dig into shows that I cover here it tended to be catch-up on other works, such as finishing out Lucifer, which was great, and getting a bit further on Y: The Last Man. The show opened with three episodes and I spaced those out plus had a fourth come out as well. So what mostly made up the week was catching up on long ongoing things plus a couple of fall premiers.

The ninth season of The Goldbergs got underway and oh my god I am so watching this show on inertia alone. I mean, it found its formula early on and once that happened everyone just leans harder into their traits. Beverly’s even more problematic than usual while Murray does less and less – the actor’s not even bothering to shave this year it looks like. There are subplot elements that I do like to keep up on though as I like the weird relationship with Geoff that exists and there’s something to be said for Barry’s push into medicine where he does have a gift while still being an absolute idiot everywhere else. It’s a good reminder of the truth that smart in one field does not mean smart about everything. That said, I’d rather this was canceled and Schooled got a few more seasons instead.

The first season of Home Economics was not good. It had some moments that worked and it has actors I do like, but I wanted to give the second season a chance because they had to go through filming their first season amid the early days of the pandemic and that really altered a lot of what a number of shows were trying to do – especially ones that involve kids. The second season isn’t starting off significantly better, but it has a bit more potential since they get out of the home/sets a bit more and that opening of things up brings more color to it all, which is important. I’m willing to give it a few more episodes to prove itself.

Yes, that’s right, I’m the problem. I like Chuck Lorre comedies. I watched most of Two and a Half Men during its run, I watched Mom, and I was a really big fan of Big Bang Theory and still watch reruns. I really like United States of Al and thoroughly enjoyed The Kominsky Method. So it’s no surprise that I watch and enjoy Bob Hearts Abishola, which plays a weirdly skewed direction of things. The odd couple that are the leads works well while doing its best to not lean into too many stereotypes, though they can’t help it on some occasions, but this season has opened in a fun way with them going to Nigeria. They’ve done well in presenting, as briefly as they did, the different sides to the country to try and counter the generic “it’s all slums” view that so many people seem to have. But, at its core, it’s a simple relationship romantic comedy and that’s where it works the most. I like this weird cast of characters and the way they play off each other, especially with the family members that have been in the US for years and are realizing just how American they are now.

B Positive is trash.

In catching up on older things that I’ve got in my collection that I’ve revisited while working while trying to avoid streaming so as to not use up my data cap, it’s an odd mix this week. Over the course of the week, I’ve background watched:

  • Hiding Out
  • Deadpool
  • Deadpool 2
  • Hot Fuzz
  • I Feel Pretty
  • Mickey Blue Eyes
  • Major League
  • Secret of My Success
  • Shaun of the Dead
  • She’s Out Of My League
