After a year with many downs and little highs, it’s the end of the road. It was a rough road to be sure as it lacked a focus for most of its time. But the time for words is over as fists, swords, and cannons take over. The fate of the world lies with Taichi and Yamato in the corner and the main attraction of Omnimon vs Negamon. Taichi and Yamato head to Negamon’s core where they come face to face with his final and most grotesque form yet. At least it’s something to make him appear scary since he just crashed the party with no explanation.

The final battle hits all the right notes to make it a fantastic last stand. Negamon uses his abilities to clone Omnimon’s abilities and weapons to make this battle riveting. It’s like that evil twin that appears in the middle of things to make a mess out of things. The devastating appearance plus the weapons make the battle at least have some weight to it. They push each other to the limits with all of the same moves. There is no rest for the weary. In a surprising turn of events, Sora, Koshiro, Joe, and Mimi come back from the dead to balance out this fight of destiny. They help out from outside of Negamon’s core. At least they get to do something in these moments. They combine their power to give Omnimon one more evolution to Omnimon Alter S.

Some pleasant surprises were how the music evolved for the final battle. I talked about how the music in this show has been aesthetically speaking but it takes it one step further for the last battle. An orchestra version of Break The Chain occurs just as the battle starts. This song has been outstanding and it’s now being featured in an orchestra version. But it doesn’t stop there. They had to go beyond their limit and have a new variation of Break the Chain for Omnimon Alter S appearance.

The door is left wide open for this season to be explored further but for the meanwhile, it just needs to remain closed. The Digidestined return to the Real World alongside their Digimon. Taichi ends up back in the Digital World with Agumon. It’s a nice change of pace from having to say goodbye. It doesn’t have that feeling that things are over but it’s just time until the next adventure. Everyone wants to return to the Digital World someday but I would have wanted the Digidestined to have more of an emotional connection to the Digital World. The Digimon of the Digital World are showing praising their saviors and looking at how far they have come. It’s nice to see that the Digidestined made an impact on the Digimon. But the Digital World made no impact on most of the Digidestined. It would have made these moments more sweeter if they had more of a connection. It was hilarious seeing the Digimon make a statue of Queen Mimi or going back to the hamburger restaurant where he looked fondly on his french fries innocence days.

Some of the issues I have with this season is that it had a chance to copy what made the original great but it just made a mess of things. It couldn’t balance out an eight-person cast and it just forgot about them on an individual and team level. Only two of them have been given any chance to develop and they weren’t even the two that the show was heavily promoting. Mimi and Joe would have made a better leading protagonist than Taichi and Yamato. They were the only ones that had any style and attachment to the Digital World and the Real World. Even though this is a children’s show, I don’t feel like I’m being too critical coming from an adult’s point of view. The original was willing to address heavy issues that were a burden on children and this season just ignored all of that.

In Summary:
This final battle was a great way to go out on what had been a lackluster season. It tied up things as neatly as it could considering what come before it. As a season, it just wasn’t able to carry a pleasing tone. It didn’t have a vision for what it wanted to accomplish. None of the characters felt pushed to evolve and remain the same person that they started as.
