‘Komi Can’t Communicate’ Live-Action Announced For Fall 2021

The manga makes the leap to anime - and live-action!

With a popular manga series that’s currently ongoing, the Komi Can’t Communicate property is making the leap to anime form this fall. Now, it looks like a live-action adaptation is going to land not long before it as well. NHK has revealed that an eight-episode live-action series will p premiere on September 6th, 2021 as part of its late-night drama block. Directed by Yoshihito Okashita and Eiji Ishii, they’re working from scripts by Fumie Mizuhashi. Elaiza Ikeda will play Shoko Komi while Takahisa Masuda will play Hitohito Tadano.

The anime adaptation will see Ayumu Watanabe as the chief director working with director Kazuki Kawagoe based on the series composition by Deko Akao. Atsuko Nakajima is working on the character designs with OLM handling the animation production.

The Japanese cast includes:

  • Aoi Koga as Shōko Komi
  • Gakuto Kajiwara as Hitohito Tadano
  • Rie Murakawa as Najimi Osana

The manga began in 2016 in Weekly Shonen Sunday and has released twenty volumes in Japan so far with Viz Media bringing out twelve in English as of the announcement.

Plot Concept: Timid Tadano is a total wallflower, and that’s just the way he likes it. But all that changes when he finds himself alone in a classroom on the first day of high school with the legendary Komi. He quickly realizes she isn’t aloof—she’s just super awkward. Now he’s made it his mission to help her on her quest to make 100 friends!
