The original FLCL series has certainly gotten around over the years to a couple of different distribution services, with it originally licensed by Synch-Point before ending up with Funimation. The folks at Hulu have added the original six-episode series to their streaming service in its original Japanese language with English subtitles. What’s interesting with it is that unlike other shows that we usually talk about here, it doesn’t list a licensor with it whereas it usually has listed Funimation for the last few years.

Originally released in 2000, the series was directed by Kazuya Tsurumaki based on the script by Yoji Enokido. With original character designs by Yoshiyuki Sadamato, it was animated by Production IG and Gainax.

The Japanese cast includes Jun Mizuki as Naota Nandaba, Mayumi Shintani as Haruko Haruhara and Izumi Kasagi as Mamimi Samejima. The English cast includes Barbara Goodson as Nandaba Naota, Kari Wahlgren as Haruhara Haruko and Jennifer Sekiguchi as Samejima Mamimi.

Plot concept: Naota’s a bit quirky, but he can still pass for normal. Haruko’s totally quirky and she’ll never pass for normal. When she runs over Naota with her motor scooter and brains him with a bass guitar, his world doesn’t get turned upside down — It gets incredibly weird. There’s nothing else in the world like FLCL. This one’s going to change your life.
