‘Shazam: Fury of the Gods’ Updates With Actor Departure

3 min read
We all have a superhero inside us, it just takes a bit of magic to bring it out. And a sequel doesn't hurt.

Warner Bros. Pictures through New Line brought out the Shazam! film back in early 2019 where it did #366 million worldwide, which isn’t what you get for a lot of superhero film box office totals in general. But the film had something like an $80 million or so budget and is part of a larger buildup with Black Adam that’s in the works. As we knew, Henry Gayden is coming back to work on the screenplay for it with David F. Sandberg returning as the director and last summer we learned that the film will be called Shazam! Fury of the Gods.

With filming underway and some shots out there of the new updated suit for the lead, director David F. Sandberg brought out the tweet below that showed off the adult version of the cast in their costumes since they were all given an update. What I had missed at the time that for Mary, it wasn’t Michelle Borth taking on the role as we saw in the previously. Here, Grace Fulton as Mary Bromfield is playing both the younger version and the adult version with the director kind of handwaving it away cutely. With the actress being older than the rest of the kids, it’s not too much of a surprise but some places are talking about problematic Instagram posts that Borth had made which lead to the change.

Check out our review of the film.

The cast from the original film includes Asher Angel and Zachary Levi as Billy Batson / Shazam, Mark Strong as Thaddeus Sivana, Ron Cephas Jones as the ancient wizard Shazam, Grace Fulton as Mary Bromfield, Jack Dylan Grazer as Freddy Freeman, Ian Chen as Eugene Choi, Jovan Armand as Pedro Peña, Faithe Herman as Darla Dudley, Cooper Andrews as Victor Vazquez, Marta Milans as Rosa Vazquez,  David J. MacNeil as Mr. Bryer, Lotta Losten, Helen Mirren as Hespera, and Lucy Liu

The character of Billy Batson derives his powers by saying the phrase, “Shazam” which is an acronym of the ancient world gods and historical figures Solomon, Hercules, Atlas, Zeus, Achilles and Mercury, which them transforms him into the adult form.

Previously:

The film is set in the DC universe but is avoiding the dark by going for a more fun, family-centric tone. Shazam was created by Bill Parker and C.C. Beck. Christopher Godsick, Jeffrey Chernov, Dwayne Johnson, Dany Garcia and Hiram Garcia serve as executive producers.

Plot Concept: We all have a superhero inside us, it just takes a bit of magic to bring it out. In Billy Batson’s (Angel) case, by shouting out one word—SHAZAM!—this streetwise 14-year-old foster kid can turn into the adult Super Hero Shazam (Levi), courtesy of an ancient wizard. Still a kid at heart—inside a ripped, godlike body—Shazam revels in this adult version of himself by doing what any teen would do with superpowers: have fun with them! Can he fly? Does he have X-ray vision? Can he shoot lightning out of his hands? Can he skip his social studies test? Shazam sets out to test the limits of his abilities with the joyful recklessness of a child. But he’ll need to master these powers quickly in order to fight the deadly forces of evil controlled by Dr. Thaddeus Sivana (Strong).
