Netflix Adds ‘Words Bubble Up Like Soda Pop’ Anime Feature Film Trailer & Date

2 min read
After meeting one bright, sunny day, a shy boy who expresses himself through haiku and a bubbly but self-conscious girl share a brief, magical summer.

We learned about the 2020 feature film Cider no Yō ni Kotoba ga Wakiagaru back in February 2019 which translates as Words Bubbling Up Like Cider. After revealing a May 15th, 2020 Japanese theatrical debut at the end of 2019, we learned in March that the film was delayed indefinitely due to the pandemic. That was recently set with a new date of June 25th, 2021.

Now, the folks at Netflix appear to be getting into the game as they’ve picked up the trailer and have revealed a July 22nd, 2021 streaming release date for the film on their service.

The Japanese cast now includes:

  • Ichikawa Somegorō VIII as Cherry
  • Hana Sugisaki as Smile
  • Kōichi Yamadera as Fujiyama, Cherry’s haiku teacher
  • Megumi Han as Bieber, Cherry’s friend
  • Natsuki Hanae as Japan, Cherry’s friend and an idol otaku
  • Yuichiro Umehara as Toughboy, Cherry’s acquaintance
  • Megumi Nakajima as Julie, Smile’s big sister
  • Sumire Morohoshi as Marie, Smile’s little sister

It’s directed by Kyohei Ishiguro based on the screenplay by Dai Sato. Yukiko Aikei is handling the character designs with Signal.MD and Sublimination handling the animation production.

The film’s theme song is “Cider no Yō ni Kotoba ga Wakiagaru” and includes the insert song from Taeko Onuki with “YAMAZAKURA.”

Plot Concept: Cherry always wears headphones and puts the feelings he cannot utter into his hobby, Japanese haiku poems. Smile always wears a mask to conceal her large front teeth, for which she has dental braces. As a popular video star, she streams a video about seeking “cuteness.”
