Way back in 2016, we began our real coverage of this property when Yen Press, having been doing the simulpub release of new chapters of Jun Mochizuki’s Vanitas no Carte, announced their intention to bring it out in physical compiled form as The Case Study of Vanitas. With eight volumes out so far, there’s been a slow and steady approach to this book that’s serialized in Gangan Joker Magazine.

Back in March 2021, Anipelx revealed that the series is getting an anime adaptation that will arrive as part of the Summer 2021 season. With a July 2nd, 2021 debut st for it recently, Funimation has now announced their pickup of the series with plans to simulcast it as part of the season.

Tomoyuki Itamura is directing it based on the scripts overseen by Deko Akao. Yoshiyuki Ito is handling the character designs and serving as the chief animation director with BONES handling the animation production.

The initial Japanese cast includes:

  • Natsuki Hanae as Vanitas
  • Kaito Ishikawa as Noé
  • Inori Minase as Jeanne
  • Shino Shimoji as Luca
  • Ai Kayano as Dominique
  • Akira Ishida as The Teacher
  • Miyu Komaki as Murr
  • Taro Kiuchi as Dante
  • Kouji Yusa as Johann
  • Riho Kuma as Riche

Plot concept: There once lived a vampire known as Vanitas, hated by his own kind for being born under a blue full moon, as most arise on the night of a crimson one. Afraid and alone, he created the “Book of Vanitas,” a cursed grimoire that would one day take his vengeance on all vampires; this is how the story goes at least.

Vanitas no Carte follows Noé, a young man traveling aboard an airship in 19th century Paris with one goal in mind: to find the Book of Vanitas. A sudden vampire attack leads him to meet the enigmatic Vanitas, a doctor who specializes in vampires and, much to Noé’s surprise, a completely ordinary human. The mysterious doctor has inherited both the name and the infamous text from the Vanitas of legend, using the grimoire to heal his patients. But behind his kind demeanor lies something a bit more sinister…
