One of the best UC OVAs made.

Mobile Suit Gundam 0080 Japanese CoverOne of the early OVAs that I had seen as a new anime fan was the Mobile Suit Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket project which is what made me a Gundam fan. I wouldn’t see the TV series for almost a decade later, in fact. That project has stood the test of time since it came out in 1989 and now it’s getting some new manga material.

Gundam Ace magazine has revealed that Hiroyuki Tamakoshi is launching a new series based on the property from the perspective of Chris. It’s set to debut with the June 26th, 2021 installment of the magazine. Tamakoshi worked as the artist on the Gundam: Return of the Lion manga that Harutoshi Fukui wrote.

Nozomi Entertainment released the series on Blu-ray in North America previously and you can read our review of it.

Plot concept: Universal Century 0079. When the Principality of Zeon learns of a new Gundam being built, the veteran spec-ops Cyclops Team is dispatched to the civilian colony of Libot to investigate. Their newest member, Bernard “Bernie” Wiseman, gets shot down in action and meets young Alfred “Al” Izuruha, who dreams of mobile suits and space battles. Al thinks of Bernie as a friend, and even goes to great lengths to track him down while on his mission. He doesn’t realize the potential danger he’s in. And Al’s next door neighbor Christina “Chris” Mackenzie returns home with a new “government job.” She’s really the test pilot of the top-secret Gundam Alex – the objective of Bernie’s mission! As the story unfolds, three lives will be changed forever by this one small part of the war.
