‘Captain Marvel’ Sequel Gets New Title & Sets Theatrical Release

2 min read
Time to start moving forward with the sequel

Plans for the sequel to Captain Marvel have been moving along for awhile as the last main thing we had learned was that Nia DaCosta has joined the project to direct the film, having earned a lot of attention for her work directing the reboot of Candyman. We also knew that Megan McDonnell was in advanced negotiations to write the screenplay. McDonnell is part of the writing team for the WandaVision series that debuted earlier this year.

Now, as Marvel Studios promotes the return to the cinema in 2021, they’ve confirmed a November 11th, 2022 release date for this sequel but also with the new name of The Marvels.

This name change isn’t too much of a surprise, though Brie Larson will still be the leading character/actor on it, as we know that Teyonah Parris has joined the project from WandaVision and will likely play some form of her comics Captain Marvel persona, and that Iman Vellani of the upcoming Ms. Marvel series will be involved in it as well. That show is tentatively set for an end of 2021 premiere.

Zawe Ashton joined previously to play the villain in the film.

The first Captain Marvel film saw Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck tackling this project as co-directors, which was written by Inside Out co-writer Meg LaFauve with Guardians of the Galaxy writer Nicole Perlman. The cast Brie Larson as Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel and Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury with Jude Law, Gemma Chan, and Ben Mendelsohn.

Property Concept: Captain Marvel is an extraterrestrial Kree warrior who finds herself caught in the middle of an intergalactic battle between her people and the Skrulls. Living on Earth in 1995, she keeps having recurring memories of another life as U.S. Air Force pilot Carol Danvers. With help from Nick Fury, Captain Marvel tries to uncover the secrets of her past while harnessing her special superpowers to end the war with the evil Skrulls.
