Starting as a browser game in 2016 and becoming a decent little multimedia project, Bungo to Alchemist was revealed to be making the leap to anime back in December 2019. With an April 3rd, 2020 premiere debut behind it already, Funimation is the dub for it as Bungo and Alchemist -Gears of Judgement-. The series is set for an April 30th, 2021 debut where all thirteen episodes are being dropped at once at Funimation, making for a good binge experience.
The series will have Laura Stahl as the ADR director working at NYAV Post for it. The English cast includes:
- Richard Thomas as Ryunosuke Akutagawa
- Zeno Robinson as Osamu Dazai
- Chris Hackney as Haruo Sato
- Barrett Leddy as Chuya Nakahara
- Dino Andrade as Cat
- Robb Moreiera as Sakunosuke Oda
- Eddy Lee as Toson Shimazaki
- Billy Kametz as Ango Sakaguchi
- Martin Fraser as Shusei Tokuda
The series has Toshinori Watanabe directing based on the scripts coming from Jun Kumagai. Atsuko Nakajima is working on the character designs with OLM handling the animation production.
The Japanese cast includes Ryōta Ōsaka as Murō Saisei, Tomoaki Maeno as Naoya Shiga, KENN as Saneatsu Mushanokōji, Shinichiro Miki as Kan Kikuchi, Hiroyuki Yoshino as Masao Kume, Yūki Tai as Haruo Satō, Nobuhiko Okamoto as Jun’ichirō Tanizaki, and Kōji Takahashi as Tatsuo Hori.
The opening sequence features the song “Goodbye (グッド・バイ)” by Urashimasakatasen. We also have the ending theme song of “Yabunonaka no Synthesis (藪の中のジンテーゼ)” by Yoshino Nanjou which is pretty haunting.

Plot Concept: The series follows a group of historic writers (all based on real people) who use their special abilities to rescue books that have been cursed by the “Taints,” an evil force. While its premise is fantastical, the series’ core focus will be on its characters, some of whom you may recognize, including Ryunosuke Akutagawa and H.P. Lovecraft.
