With an original story back in 1985 from Seiko Tanabe that saw a 2003 live-action film, the anime adaptation of Josee, The Tiger and the Fish is moving right along. The film saw a December 25th, 2020 debut date after being pushed back due to the usual issues, in Japan. Overseas rollouts aren’t what they were due to the pandemic but Australian distributor Madman Entertainment launched a page for it back in February 2021 revealing plans for an April 1st, 2021 debut in the region.

The distributor pulled the film from its April 1st, 2021 release date with plans for it to come later just about a week before it was set to arrive. Thankfully, it hasn’t taken too long to get a feel for what the plan is as they’ve now announced that it’ll arrived in Australian cinemas on June 10.

The official site is now streaming the first four minutes of this BONES animated film for people to check out and anticipate all the more.

Recently, Anime Limited confirmed that they have picked up the film for distribution with plans for a 2021 debut with some theatrical screenings and a home video release in the UK.

The film is directed by Kotaro Tamura based on the screenplay by Sayaka Kuwamura. Haruka Iizuka is adapting the character designs from Nao Emoto.

The Japanese cast includes:

  • Taishi Nakagawa as Tsuneo Suzukawa
  • Kaya Kiyohara as Josee
  • Yume Miyamoto as Mai Ninomiya
  • Kazuyuki Okitsu as Hayato Matsūra
  • Lynn as Kana Kishimoto
  • Chiemi Matsutera as Chizu Yamamura

Plot Concept: Tsuneo, an ordinary college student and avid diver, unexpectedly becomes the caretaker of a wheelchair-bound young woman in order to raise money for this dream to go diving in Mexico. This young woman, who calls herself Josee after her favorite book character, is sullen and demanding, but as Tsuneo helps Josee interact with the outside world and learns more about Josee’s unique perspective, their feelings grow into love. The two begin to support each other in ways beyond just romance.
