‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’ Sequel Expands Directors Chair(s)

2 min read
More a formalization of what's been happening.

The release of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse in went well for Sony Pictures as the film gobbled up about $375 million worldwide in theaters alone. A sequel was announced in 2019 that was scheduled with an April 8th, 2022 release date. The main production team and cast are going to be coming back for it and hopefully, it’ll utilize the post-credits sequence as part of its inspiration.

Now, a new update has come down from Sony that reveals that while Joaquim Dos Santos was in the director’s seat already for it, they’ve now added Kemp Powers and Justin K. Thompson to that position, according to Variety. This isn’t too much of a surprise as the pair have been working with Dos Santos since the start and their contributions are clearly piling up to the point where they’re being added as full-on directors.

“We are so lucky to have Joaquim, Justin and Kemp on the ‘Spider-Verse’ team,” added executive producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller. “We are huge fans of Joaquim’s work — he makes his characters so heartfelt and unique, and he can tell an emotional story with an action sequence the way a musical does through a song. Justin is a maverick filmmaker who relentlessly pursues visual innovation and surprise but always in support of the emotional storytelling. Kemp’s work is incisive and ambitious and funny — with a writer’s wisdom and a director’s heart — he just knows what matters in every scene. All three of them elevate every project they take on, and they are certainly raising our game. We honestly just like them and want to be their friends and we’re hoping working on this movie together for the next few years will totally make that happen.”

The first film made its way to home video as a February 26th, 2019 release digitally while the physical media releases landed on March 19th, 2019 as DVD/BD and 4K versions are coming for it. What’s really impressive is that there’s close to 90-minutes of bonus materials coming, though sadly there are no director commentaries that would be really neat considering the folks involved and how this all comes together.

Directed by Bob Persichetti and Peter Ramsey, it comes from a screenplay by Phil Lord and Chris Miller. The cast for it includes Shameik Moore as Miles Morales / Spider-Man, Liev Schreiber, Mahershala Ali as Aaron Davis / Prowler, and Brian Tyree Henry as Jefferson Davi.

Plot Concept: Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse introduces Brooklyn teen Miles Morales, and the limitless possibilities of the Spider-Verse, where more than one can wear the mask.
