We noted previously that TC Entertainment went back to 1982 for this series with plans for the Makyou Densetsu Acrobunch property. Known as Acrobunch – The Quest for Treasure, the series ran for twenty-four episodes throughout 1982 and was scheduled for a September 30th, 2020 DVD box set. Last year, Discotek Media has picked up the show for release themselves but are producing it as an SDBD release. The set saw a February 23rd, 2021 debut where it was priced at $39.95. No extras are listed at the moment and the release will be in Japanese with English subtitles. Check the US cover artwork below as well as the Japanese set.
Now, the series is making the leap to streaming for people to check out with RetroCrush bringing it to the service in its original Japanese with English subtitles.
In Japan, the three-disc set is priced at 20,000 yen and includes announcement promos and a commentary of some sort. The series has been noteworthy as Shigeru Nakahara’s first work as he went on to voice a lot of well-known characters throughout the 80s and 90s from Legend of Galactic Heroes to Yu Yu Hakusho.
The series was directed by Takao Yotsuji based on the series composition by Yu Yamamoto. Based on the original work by Kyoro Ikeoa, Mitsumi Inomata and Shigenori Kageyama served as the character designers with Kokusai Eigasha handling the production of the animation.
The Japanese cast includes Akio Nojima as Ryou, Hidekatsu Shibata as Tatsuya, Hideyuki Tanaka as Ryou, Hitoshi Kubota as Narrator, Kei Tomiyama as Aruta, Norio Wakamoto as Randou Hiro, Shigeru Nakahara as Randou Jun, and Tesshō Genda as Gepeu.
The series saw French and Italian releases over the years.
Plot Concept: It’s always been marine farmer and entrepreneur Tatsuya Rando’s dream to go globetrotting around the world in search of the mysterious treasure of Quaschika. His wish soon comes true, though, after an attempt on his life by Goblins, a subterranean race of humanoids that want the treasure for their own purposes. Tatsuya and his five children pilot a giant mecha, Acrobunch, traveling to ancient ruins around the world in search of clues. The Goblins make it a deadly race, though, piloting their own mechas and UFOs to beat the Randos to the punch while getting revenge against all humans.
Noah’s Ark? El Dorado? The statues of Easter Island? These and many more archaeological finds are here, all pointing to the greatest treasure in the universe, Quaschika!
