CGI/Animation ‘ThunderCats’ Gets Director

3 min read

The talk of a live-action Thundercats movie has been around for as long as I can remember and while I could see how they could do it with some changes, part of me just wished it would never happen. And I thought after Cats that it might be a dead project for good because if your makeup design reminds you of that film at all, well, it’d kill half the marketing of it right then and there.

But, alas, it looks like it’s still coming, according to Deadline.

Director Adam Wingard has boarded the project just as his Godzilla vs. Kong film opens. Wingard has worked adaptations before such as his time on the Netflix incarnation of Death Note. The project has Rideback’s Dan Lin and Vertigo’s Roy Lee (they were producers on the Wingard-directed Death Note), with an early script by David Coggeshall serving as the basis. Wingard is set to rewrite the script with Simon Barrett. The project is being envisioned as a hybrig CGI/animation thing but that tends to leave you with more questions than answers.

Original plot concept: Born on the doomed planet Thundera, in a faraway galaxy, the ThunderCats — half human, half feline — must find a new home on the Third Earth, a strange world where they must battle mutants led by the evil S-S-Slithe and the ancient devil priest, Mumm-Ra, who seeks the source of the ThunderCats’ power: the Eye of Thundera, embedded in the Sword of Omens, possessed by young noble Lion-O. The ThunderCats — Jaga, the wise; Tygra, the invisible; Cheetara, the quick; sly duo Wilykat and Wilykit; the deadly Panthro; Snarf and more — are all sworn to protect their young lord, Lion-O, but Mumm-Ra can transform himself into anything from a warrior to a swarm of locusts; where evil lies, there you will find Mumm-Ra. Can the Cats triumph over his tyranny?

Reboot plot concept: The ThunderCats are back! A generation after becoming beloved animation icons, the mighty survivors of Thundera returned for a bold, new re-imagining that mixed the best of the past with the boldness of the new. After the destruction of the cat civilization of Thundera by the evil Mumm-Ra, young Prince Lion-O leads a small band of survivors to safety. As the threats of Mumm-Ra ring in their ears, these determined cats know what they must do: find the Book of Omens. Using his powerful Sword of Omens, Lion-O guides his friends, facing vicious foes and making fantastic new allies while racing towards a showdown with Mumm-Ra. Now all 26 episodes are available in “sight beyond sight” 1080p HD on Blu-ray Disc as they were meant to be seen. So get ready to rip into the action with Lion-O, Tygra, Panthro, Snarf, Cheetara, Wily Kit, Wily Kat and hear the battle cry of “ThunderCats Ho!” once again, for the very first time!
