Benedict Cumberbatch Talks Sam Raimi’s Direction Of ‘Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness’

Some new casting details debuts.

Marvel Studios back in July 2019 announced Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness which is being tied into the November 2020 Disney+ WandaVision series. The film has Sam Raimi on board to direct it and it was originally scheduled for a May 7th, 2021 release, which has been pushed back to a March 25th, 2022 release date with the cascading pandemic effects. With filming underway and fans a lot more excited for it after the events of WandaVision, the folks at Collider had some really good words out of Benedict Cumberbatch on what it’s like to work with director Sam Raimi on it.

“Sam [is] amazing,” said Cumberbatch. “He’s so collaborative. God, he comes with the baggage of an icon. He’s an incredible force, especially in this genre. But he’s so humble, he’s so nice, he’s so appreciative, you really wanna serve him. And boy, when he’s happy, you know you’ve done something right. He’s so good at getting you there and getting it there. It’s been a very, very collaborative process, this one.”

“Our origin stories, I guess, and obviously the beasts that were the Avengers films to be a part of were a thrill,” added Cumberbatch. “But you’re kind of just along for the ride. You do the best with what you’ve already got given to do. The second time around, there’s a bit more of, ‘So, what do you want to do, and how do we go about solving this?’ So it feels very creative. Scarily so, sometimes.”

The cast includes Benedict Cumberbatch as Dr. Stephen Strange, Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff / Scarlet Witch, Benedict Wong as Wong, Rachel McAdams as Christine Palmer, Chiwetel Ejiofor as Karl Mordo, and Xochitl Gomez as America Chavez.

Property Concept: After the events of Avengers: Endgame (2019) and WandaVision (2021), Dr. Stephen Strange’s continuing research on the Time Stone is hindered by a friend-turned-enemy, resulting in Strange unleashing unspeakable evil.
