Episode #8: “FINAL BATTLE”

I may love it when a plan comes together, but it’s almost just as good when one falls apart for lack of backup planning.
As Senku’s group follows through on their cave ambush Senku is relying on a few key things going his way. One is that the guards will be so shocked and confused that flight will take over before fight. The second is that if he can reach the cave he’ll have the last ingredient that he would need to make gunpowder.
Now my major issue with this cave being so important to this task is that it can’t possibly be the only source of bat guano in the area. They know the chemical they’re after is nitric acid. Senku should know that there are several other ways to synthesis it. (He has access to two of the other chemicals needed to make it.) Basically, the alternate solutions are disregarded because they aren’t useful for the plot. (Just like how the show conveniently ignores language drift and the problems of inbreeding.) So everyone is being put in danger for the sake of depriving Tsukasa of tools. Tools that he mostly doesn’t want to use because he wants a world without the dangers and destructions of mankind.
But who needs communication and logic when you have a tank? Shock and awe are the orders of the day as the group raids the cave. An explosion works to drive off some of the guards while the group disarms the rest. The tank succumbs to a pitfall trap, as it would, and out comes one last special weapon to fight off the guards with a sound wave.
This leads to perhaps one of the best gags in the entire series thus far. It singlehandedly justifies Taiju screaming his lines over and over again. His loud presence actually is used as a weapon of war. The payoff is absolutely worth it. Team science wins the day! Horray!
Before the celebration can begin Senku’s supply of gunpowder supplies is destroyed by the arrival of Tsukasa and his fighters. If Senku’s entire plan hinged on one bag of black powder then he really does have a gap in his logic. It’s about to be WWIII as the two sides square off, but can team science really win against the raw strength of Tsukasa’s side? Senku claims to have one more ace up his sleeve, but it’s not looking good.
Senku’s plan doesn’t go off without a hitch. Mainly because he had no follow-through. Perhaps he thought that by the point Tsukasa arrived he would have been able to surround the cave with explosives but the lack of a plan B really did the group in. Now that swords are drawn and blood has spilled what is it going to take to win the day? Luck, probably, but I’m curious to see if there’s a last-minute science save somewhere in Senku’s future, or if he’s going to be carried on the strength of friendship alone.
