Osomatsu-san has much to teach us this week. Important life lessons such as: don’t be an inconvenience! Respect your seniors! And not all fairytales have happy endings!

Osomatsu-san begins in the same place it did last week, at the convenience store. But this time it’s Choromatsu and Ichimatsu who are stuck between a rock and a hard place. Episode 20 posed a very simple question – do we buy condoms or not? But this week is a little more thought-provoking. “Is This Okay?” begs the question, when does one become an inconvenience at the convenience store? The boys are known to loiter around, seeing as they’ve got nothing better to do, but Choro and Ichi begin to wonder at what point they’ve overstayed their welcome. After all, their concept of time is different from a normal person’s. They wrack their brains to the point of fearful confusion, repenting profusely as an uncaring employee walks by. Oh, but they each bought something, so that should put their minds at ease! Quite the opposite, actually. The two of them hope the cashier won’t judge them based on the cost of their items. After all, their value of money is different from a normal person’s. Once again, they cower and atone as another unphased employee walks by. I know plenty of people like this in real life. In most cases, nobody cares about such trivial issues. Ironically, the more you worry about being an inconvenience, the more you become one – for yourself that is!
“Greenroom” follows the Riceballs and their journey to win the A-1 comedy tournament. While working on their routine in the breakroom, they’re interrupted by a comedic duo known as IyaChibi (robotic versions of Iyami and Chibita). This skit highlights toxic workplace interactions and the issues that arise with senior/junior dynamics. Listening to pointless conversations, enduring personal jabs, and accepting lunch offers when they’d rather not – these are just a few of the things you must endure for the sake of your seniors. But there are some who don’t understand that antiquated dynamic. It’s not uncommon for an airheaded newbie to speak out of turn. One such newbie gives IyaChibi a hard time for their last performance. The Riceballs can feel the tension climbing as IyaChibi wince at every remark. Even when you’re not too partial to your seniors, there’s a time and place for everything, learn to read the room newbie! And his provocations couldn’t have come at a worse time – the results for A-1 round one are in! The Riceballs made it through the first round! Unfortunately, the same can’t be said for IyaChibi…well, this just got a little awkward. “Greenroom” is a great example of the Riceballs finding their groove as part of the main cast.
The final skit is “Totoderella”, a very crass reimagining of Cinderella. As you might imagine, Totoko plays the titular role. For the most part, the story is a one-for-one adaption – mean stepsisters, a magical fairy Godmother (or in this case, Godmatsu), a ball at the royal castle, glass slippers, etc. The one main difference is the heroine herself, Totoderella. While Cinderella is a good-hearted, strong-willed, dreamer – Totoderella is basically the exact opposite. Rude, conniving, and conceited, Totoderella takes more after Totoko and Cinderella. While Cinderella’s story has been the foundation for many an homage, there’s none quite like an Osomatsu-san version.
In Summary:
A solid episode this week, nothing stood out as especially good or bad, just more of the same absurd Osomatsu-san formula!
