Leigh Bardugo’s Grishaverse novels Shadow and Bone and Six of Crows saw a pickup from Netflix for development under the Shadow and Bone title back in 2019. An eight-episode series is in the works based on the novels with Eric Heisserer adapting it and we learned at the end of 2020 that it’s set for an April 23rd, 2021 debut. Now, as we’re just two months from that debut, a full trailer clocking in at nearly three minutes has arrived and it definitely has an engaging and intriguing look about it.
Heisserer has a lot of credits to his name with Arrival a couple of years ago and more recently with Bird Box. Shawn Levy is also involved as an executive producer with his 21 Laps production company bringing it to Netflix as part of their deal.
The main cast for it includes Jessie Mei Li as Alina Starkov, Ben Barnes as General Kirigan, Freddy Carter as Kaz Brekker, Amita Suman as Inej Ghafa, Kit Young as Jesper Fahey, and Archie Renaux as Malyen Oretsev.
Heisserer will serve as writer and executive producer as well as the showrunner for the project. The original works have 2.5 million copies in English sold with it adapted into 38 other languages. That’ll ramp up more with this announcement plus with the third volume, King of Scars, coming out later this month.
Plot Concept: Shadow and Bone brings together the stories and characters of both Shadow and Bone and Six of Crows, two overlapping series that take place in Bardugo’s Grishaverse. In a world cleaved in two by a massive barrier of perpetual darkness, where unnatural creatures feast on human flesh, a young soldier uncovers a power that might finally unite her country. But as she struggles to hone her power, dangerous forces plot against her. Thugs, thieves, assassins and saints are at war now, and it will take more than magic to survive.
