“You Ain’t My Kind”
What They Say:
After growing up in Tokyo, high school student Jin Kaito moves to Nagoya where he meets Yatogame Monaka, a fellow student who puts her Nagoya dialect on full display. With her cat-like appearance and unvarnished Nagoya dialect, Yatogame won’t open up to him at all. This popular local comedy is increasing the status of Nagoya through observation of the adorable Yatogame-chan!
Content: (please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers)
Picking up with some of where things left off, we get Yatogame getting assaulted pretty hard over her love of Nagoya because “no self-respecting person would like Nagoya.” It really eats at Yatogame and she does her best to hold onto her beliefs that Nagoya is the best, but with a little help from another club member, it’s pointed out that Serura is actually from Ichinomiya, not Nagoya, which makes the whole thing just another place versus place conflict. Serura definitely got under her skin but the pushback against her almost makes Serura feel like a villain in context to the show itself.
The show doesn’t go too far into repairing Yatogame’s sense of identity here and instead delights more in toying with Serura a bit more as she runs off. And then it segues into a bit with the teachers, tea, and purchasing versus stealing tea leaves. It’s a weird segue that plays to the usual differences in regions but it’s just kind of… there.
