‘Kimagure Orange Road: I Want to Return to That Day’ Anime Film Gets RetroCrush Distribution

2 min read
One of the best anime films ever made.

One of the few series that I can rewatch and enjoy and was a big part of getting me to stick with anime in the 1990s when the selection was minimal, Kimagure Orange Road. The TV series has been available on Crunchyroll for streaming and they’ve now added the best component for it with the feature film I Want to Return to That Day. Discotek Media has picked up the rights to the series, OVAs, and the first feature film. This covers almost all of what was released except for the Shin Kimagure Orange Road movie which was released by a different distributor and can’t be packaged with the other material. Hopefully, Discotek Media will grab that at some point.

Check out our thoughts on the first film in our spoiler-heavy Thirty Years Later piece from earlier this year.

The eighteen-volume manga series had its anime picked up in the 90′s by AnimEigo where it got VHS, LD and DVD releases for the OVAs, movie and TV series.

The manga was written by Izumi Matsumoto and was serialized in Shueisha’s Weekly Shōnen Jump. It gained fame with the anime adaptation that was produced by Studio Pierrot and directed by veteran animator Osamu Kobayashi with character designs by Akemi Takada and scripts by Kenji Terada.

Plot Concept: Teenage romance meets fantasy in this series as a love triangle develops between the main character, an indecisive esper named Kyōsuke Kasuga, Madoka Ayukawa, a mercurial and enigmatic girl with a tough past, and Hikaru Hiyama, Madoka’s ditzy and energetic best friend. Kyōsuke falls in love with Madoka, and Madoka wants to return those feelings, but can not because of Hikaru’s involvement with Kyōsuke.
