The upcoming new feature anime film Inu-Oh by Masaaki Yuasa is still a lot of unknowns as it was shown as an in-production film back in 2020. We saw last summer that GKIDS had already picked up the North American distribution rights and in the fall we saw Anime Limited step in for the UK rights to the project. We had shared on Twitter this week a piece where they interviewed Yuasa about his works in general with Oscar potential for Ride Your Wave out there and he was able to talk a little bit about Inu-Oh.
DEADLINE: What’s next for you?YUASA: We are in production for Inu-Oh right now, a story about the real-life Noh performer Inu-Oh and a biwa player who lived in the Muromachi period. There are almost no records left of them, but we highlight their story as we think how such amazing people existed back then. They pursue their ideals and take on challenges that are unfavorable or without merit. Perhaps, in that way, the theme is similar to Ride Your Wave.
The film is planned for a 2021 Japanese debut as directed by Masaaki Yuasa based on the screenplay by Akiko Nogi. It’s based on the original work by Hideo Furukawa and Taiyo Matsumoto. The animation is produced by Science Saru.
