The Review
Content: (please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers):
The New Year means that it’s time for the “New Year, New Me” phrase. Japan does things a bit differently as they head to shrines to welcome in the New Year. Magu-chan is offended that Ruru and her mother are worshipping a holiday instead of him. Magu-chan isn’t going to celebrate New Year in the typical standard. Instead, it’s going to be “New Year, Seven New Magus” as he separates himself into seven parts to create endless chaos.

Ruru has to find several areas where he is hiding in the New Year Festival. They hit Ren’s family stand and Naputaaku had developed a drinking habit. Just when he was doing so well, he’s stuck to the bottle. Magu-chan is having a blast of a time wreaking havoc on the New Year celebrations. Ruru’s mother is also taking in the fun atmosphere that Magu-chan is creating but Ruru is freaking out with Magu-chan’s actions.

Izuma and Magu-chan are stuck in a never-ending battle because Izuma has nothing better to do than fight a god. Magu-chan sees him as nothing more than a bug and just does it because it’s fun for him. Ruru is celebrating Setsubub by throwing the beans at the demons as part of the celebrations. Magu takes it to the next level as throws a box of natto at Izuma. For their next battle, Ruru suggests they partake in a Setsubub Showdown, where the winner is the first to hit their opponent with beans.

Nothing involving Izuma and Magu-chan can be ordinary. What should have been a joyous occasion turns to disaster. Izuma embeds the beans with lightning magic and goes on a tedious explanation of how he did it. This means nothing to Magu-chan as he just eats them and gives his usual food reviews. This battle of the beans isn’t enough to satisfy Izuma. He hit a plateau and can’t proceed any further with his current path. It becomes a battle of raw power as Magu-chan and Izuma remove their limiters to reach their full potential. The only thing is that Magu-chan didn’t unleash all of his power. Izuma is realizing that he been walking on the wrong path. And then just like his first appearance, he gets arrested.

In Summary:
By this point, Magu-chan’s magic is wearing out and this series is hitting its limit. It’s needs something new to shake things up and create excitement and humor. This chapter is just recycling old jokes. Ruru’s mother came and left way too soon. She could laster a bit longer to show a different side to Ruru.

Chapter 28 picks up the pace by giving Izuma a new purpose. He was one of the elements in this series that was running its course. Izuma needed to shift from his current point of view to expand his horizons. There wasn’t much for him to do in his self-absorbed view that his justice was absolute. He has been giving a golden ticket to be something more than a clown.
