The Saber Marionette franchise is one that a lot of fans had as their gateway into the world of anime during the 90s and it’s getting some new love out of Japan early next year. Sadly, the release is being done as an SDBD release through we had hoped some of the pre-digital shows would get some real treatment. Frontier Wing has set a March 24th, 2021 release for this complete series box set where it’ll be priced at 27,000 yen. The materials included are:

  • Saber Marionette R (3 eps)
  • Saber Marionette J (25 eps)
  • Saber Marionette J Again (6 eps)
  • Saber Marionette J to X (26 eps)

With this still being a bit away, we’ve now gotten our first tease of artwork for it below as sent to retailers and it’s definitely going for the adorable approach. What do you think?

Everything is in “high-rate SD (480i)” that will be spread across two discs and look far better than most of the prior DVD releases by a good measure. Though SDBD isn’t my first choice, it works for some of the more problematic early digital materials here and offers a route to a new release and cleaned-up looking collection.

The series was originally largely released in North America by Bandai Entertainment on DVD.

Plot concept: Welcome to Japoness, an all male society, where the only females are high performance emotionless androids known as “marionettes.” Martial arts student and all around nice guy, Otaru, accidentally discover and wakes a coquettish marionette named Lime. He soon learns that Lime is very different from other marionettes. After waking two more emotion filled marionettes, Cherry and Bloodberry – Otaru and friends will face tough challenges ahead as they battle the evil Faust and his Saber Dolls. Can Otaru rise up to the challenge while teaching the marionettes about human emotions?
