‘Maiko-san Chi no Makanai-san’ Anime Adaptation Reveals Cast

A new anime is in the works with the adaptation of the Maiko-san Chi no Makanai-san manga by Aiko Koyama. The project was announced back in March 2020 via NHK and we learned recently it’ll be streamed beginning in February 2021 through NHK and then will get a broadcast run in the fall of 2021. Now, NHK has revealed the main staff for the series along with a new key visual for it.

The series has Yohei Suzuki directing it based on the scripts by Susumu Yamakawa. JC Staff is handling the animation for this production.

The Japanese cast includes:

  • Kana Hanazawa as Kiyo
  • MAO as Sumire
  • Minami Takayama as Kenta
  • Satsumi Matsuda as Tsurukoma
  • Kaoru Katakai as Okaa-san
  • Rikiya Koyama as Onii-san

The manga from Koyama began in 2016 in Weekly Shonen Sunday and it has thirteen volumes so far.

Plot Concept: Set in Kyoto’s “hanamachi” geisha quarter, after geisha finish their work late at night, they spend the night resting at a lodge to prepare for the next day. The story centers on Kiyo, an Aomori native who works as a cook in a geisha lodge in Kyoto after finishing junior high school and leaving home. She also has a friend named Sumire who is a maiko, or apprentice geisha.
