The Weekly TV Discussion Post For January 17th, 2021

So. Much. TV.

It’s a new year and that means… data caps! My region was lucky to avoid having those for all these years but we’re now getting capped starting this month, with some grace time, and I’ll admit that with a family of four with very different tastes, we gotta be careful how much we do stream. So I made sure to finish out some big shows last month and will probably be a touch choosier going forward, though we’re supposed to be getting some options on how to manage it for those who want “real” unlimited. Oh boy.

We’ve mostly whittled away our list of shows to watch in several of our streaming service queues so we’re definitely in a good place.

Current Netflix queue: I Am WomanRebecca, Last Tango in Halifax (upcoming season), Disenchantment (upcoming season)Chilling Adventures of Sabrina

HBO Max queue: David Bowie: The Last Five YearsThe Flight AttendantThe Third DayTolkeinJojo RabbitWatchmen TVWestworld S3

Hulu queue: Das BootSwing ThingsI Kill GiantsThey Shall Not Grow Old

The fourth and final season of Sabrina dropped over the New Year holiday weekend and I’ve gotten two more episodes in and will finish that out in the next week or so. I had hoped to have finished it off already but a lot of other things dropped in and I got… distracted. I continue to enjoy the show but knowing it’s the end has me feeling a bit less engaged with it, unfortunately. I’m definitely looking forward to seeing where some of the cast ends up from here, though I suspect most I won’t see again.

Netflix was light on my schedule this week as I was catching up on new broadcast shows like Call Me KatMr. Mayor, and Call Your Mother as I sample out the latest round of barely mediocre at best sitcoms. The only thing I got on Netflix was the first two of four episodes of the fourth season of Last Tango in Halifax and my goodness do I just want to strangle the family matriarch and how she is with absolutely everything. Every family always has one which is why she’s so bloody familiar and strikes a nerve.

I actually spent a decent bit of time catching up on movies in my to-watch home video queue simply because I’m being cautious of those data caps. That lead me to revisiting some fun things like Galaxy Quest and the 1960 Time Machine film. That also got me back to ’53 with War of the Worlds to savor in some old school goodness. I also went in the other direction for the time period with some Catherine Deneuve and Umbreallas of Cherbourg.

Of course, I also went off-course by watching the hilariously awful Zardoz and the has-not-held-up-well Zeiram from 1991.

I also took a spin with Vanilla Sky but it was mostly just to enjoy some early Penelope Cruz material as the film frustrates me on a lot of levels. Rounding out the week, I also did the Rise of the Planet of the Apes film from the recent trilogy.
