After getting a seventh season during summer 2019, Yamishibai is back for the winter 2021 season and it’s time to get into weird horror once again. With this story, we’re introduced to a group of teenagers that are doing a test of courage at some abandoned house. With them looking more like normal people than a lot of anime series do, it’s fun to watch as they begrudgingly enter it and the guys joke about the whole thing to make it seem even scarier, which unnerves Shizuka a whole lot. With one of them telling an elaborate tale, they end up exploring the second floor where the kids rooms are and it all builds well with the tension, especially with the visual design of it all. But what makes it disturbing is when a book falls, opening to a page about the handkerchief game just as Shizuka sees a handkerchief. And this is when the kids start to disappear…
The opening episode does a good job of building tension within a small space as four friends end up for far more than they bargained for. I like the pacing to it a lot and that the four look like normal teenagers and not doing this in their school uniforms. As the situation gets worse and worse after a little playtime, it just ramps up well and you’re left waiting to see if it’ll go the distance or not and just how far it will actually go. It’s good to have this series back.
