Sentai Filmworks Acquires ‘Laidbackers’ Anime Rights

Sentai adds a new title to their catalog.

Having previously hit the spring 2019 theatrical circuit with an April 5th, 2019 debut, the anime feature film with Laidbackers is getting some new distribution. Sentai Filmworks has announced their pickup of the film for both home video and digital sell-through with plans for a home video release in April 2021. They’ve acquired the rights to it in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Latin America, and the Netherlands.

The Japanese release came with a booklet in addition to the soundtrack CD while on-disc extras include two commentary tracks (newly recorded, one from the theater), along with the trailers, TV spots, character promos, and the shorts.

The film comes from director Hiroyuki Hashimoto based on the screenplay by Makoto Uezu. Jirou Suzuki handled the original character designs and Kei Tsuchiya is handling the adaptation and serving as the chief animation director. KlockWorx handled the animation production.

The Japanese cast includes Rina Hidaka as Harami Mitsuno, Himika Akaneya as Mai Maisaka, Yō Taichi as K. Kusanagi, Maria Naganawa as Ran, Yumi Uchiyama as Arnelia ,Yumiri Hanamori as Kumi Honamanuma, Saki Fujita as Yuko Saginomiya, Katsuyuki Konishi as Leonard, and Jun Fukuyama as Ron.

Plot Concept: Four former heroes are now living quiet, reincarnated lives in present-day Kyoto, Japan. They bask in the warm contentment of being ordinary, modern folk without much important to do. But their idyllic lives are shattered when a precocious elementary schooler who is secretly a reincarnated demon king they once defeated shows up and starts making some serious demands! Now the former heroes must band together with their arch-nemesis because it’s do or die for team LAIDBACKERS!
