Sony Reschedules ‘Morbius’

2 min read

With a July 31st, 2020 release date originally set for it, the Morbius film from Sony Pictures was naturally pushed back last year like most films. It ended up most recently with a March 2021 premiere set that would be tightened depending on conditions. Unsurprisingly, with the vaccination plan going as poorly as it is, the film has now been rescheduled to an October 8th, 2021 debut which we’re expected to be a lot firmer based on trendlines as studios work to get things back into theaters. We’re expecting the fall season to be when theaters are back in play more even though probably only half of the country will be vaccinated at best.

The character is a part of the Spider-Man rights bundle of characters that Sony has to exploit, like Venom and Black Cat. The film is directed by Daniel Espinosa and comes from a screenplay by Matt Sazama, Burk Sharpless, Art Marcum, and Matt Holloway.

The cast includes:

  • Jared Leto as Michael Morbius
  • Adria Arjona as Martine Bancroft
  • Matt Smith as Loxias Crown
  • Jared Harris as Morbius’s mentor
  • Tyrese Gibson as Simon Stroud
  • Michael Keaton
  • Al Madrigal

While comic book age ratings don’t correspond to film ratings, it is worth noting that the most recent comic series (cover seen to the right) is listed generally as a 12+ book through most retailers, so while the comics do get serious they’re still largely working within the same sphere as most superhero books.

Originally created in the ’70s with a push back into horror, Jared Leto has signed on to play the title character with Daniel Espinosa is set to direct. Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazama are on board for the screenplay. They came off the recent Lost in Space series for Netflix while Espinosa directed the Life film for Sony.

Property Concept: Morbius….the hunted, haunted fugitive. Morbius…the dead souled scientist. Morbius…the Living Vampire. Somewhere inside Doctor Michael Morbius is a good man who just needs a second chance.
