It’s hard to imagine how this is going to work but the Star Blazers: Space Battleship Yamato 2199 series and its followup with 2202 are in line for a compilation film. Not a series of compilation films but a single compilation film called Space Battleship Yamato 2205: A New Journey. We learned previously that the film is scheduled to open on January 15th, 2021 with its limited theatrical approach with the home video release happening on the same day. There’s a kink in the plan now as because of the covid concerns, the film has been pulled from its release date and the home video release that was happening if you went to the theater to see it has been pulled alongside the digital side. Next month’s releases weren’t mentioned.
The home video release is set for a February 25th, 2021 release where the DVD is priced at 5,800 yen, the Blu-ray at 6,800 yen, and a limited edition at select retailers coming in at 9,000 yen.
With this still a good bit away, the official site has now revealed a look at the Blu-ray case itself and the slipcase that will go around it as it’s an expanded piece of the key visual to the right that looks fantastic.
The film is 120 minutes long and extras include the commercials, promos, and a staff and cast commentary. The limited-edition is largely being kept to the Bandai A-Store.
The series was directed by Akihiro Enomoto with Yutaka Izubuchi, who also worked the series composition. Nobuteru Yuki handled the character designs with AIC And Xebec working on the animation production. The Japanese cast includes Daisuke Ono as Susumu Kodai, Houko Kuwashima as Yuki Mori, Kenichi Suzumura as Daisuke Shima, Takayuki Sugo as Captain Jūzō Okita, Akio Ohtsuka as General Elk Domel, Aya Hisakawa as Lt. Kaoru Niimi, and Aya Uchida as Warant Officer Yuria Misaki.
Plot Concept: Plot Summary: The year is 2199. The human race has been crushed in their war with the Gamilos, driven into underground cities by the invader’s assault. Scientists estimate they have only a year left. The young officers Susumu Kodai and Daisuke Shima receive a mysterious capsule from a ship that made an emergency landing on Mars and return with it to Earth. It contains humanity’s last hope: the planet Iscandar on the other side of the Magellan Galaxy has the technology to defeat the Gamilos and restore the planet. The space battleship Yamato is entrusted with this task, but they have only one year before humanity ends.
