WIT Studio brought out their big new project this summer with Great Pretender with its June 2nd, 2020 debut in Japan. With it getting a Netflix debut overseas, TOHO has now set the Japanese home video release for it. The series is set for a twenty-three episode run and the first fourteen have been streamed which makes up the first three Blu-ray releases. Each disc represents that particular arc/case and each disc is 12,000 yen. It splits with a 5/5/4 episode breakdown and we have the tentative artwork as well for the covers below.
With some artwork released previously for the second set, that’s now been updated to reveal that what we had was basically the booklet cover artwork. We now have the main disc cover and the full packaging spread ahead of its January 20th, 2021 debut.
The series is directed by Hiro Kaburagi based on the scripts from Ryota Kosawa. Yoshiyuki Sadamoto is on the character designs and Hirotaka Kato is serving as the chief animation director along with Kyoji Asano.
The Japanese cast includes Chiaki Kobayashi as Makoto “Edamame” Edamura, Junichi Suwabe as Laurent Thierry, Natsumi Fujiwara as Abigail “Aby” Jones, and Mie Sonozaki as Paula Dickins.

Plot Concept: Makoto Edamura is supposedly Japan’s greatest swindler. Together with his partner Kudo, they try to trick a Frenchman in Asakusa but unexpectedly get tricked instead. The Frenchman, whom they tried to swindle, turns out to be Laurent Thierry- a much higher-level ‘confidence man,’ in control of the mafias. Edamura is yet to find out what fate awaits him, after having engaged in the Frenchman’s dirty jobs…!
