What They Say
Even with Madoka’s help, Homura has failed to rescue Mami from her fate – worse, she may actually have brought it about. With both Sayaka and Kyouko looking to have their revenge for her part in Mami’s death, Homura has to concern herself with her own survival – on top of trying to save her friends! Can anything derail the tragic fate that awaits them all?

Content: (please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers):
Picking up after Mami’s death, this volume sees Kyouko come into her own with her powers, but when Sayaka gives all of herself to try and defeat Homura, whom they think is their enemy, and becomes the witch Homura was trying to warn them against, Kyouko realizes Homura was right all along. But with Walpurgi’s Nacht bearing down on the town, and Kyouko determined not to fight, Homura has to figure out how she can save Madoka from making the same pact she did in the previous timeline and the fate that awaits her in doing so.

This volume finishes up this little mini-arc that somewhat reimagines the Madoka Magica storyline, this time exploring one of Homura’s time loops, fully understanding all of the tragedies that await the team and still feeling helpless to stop it. There’s some strong character work in here with Homura’s desperation to change their fate but having to fight the impulses of a team that does not understand what she is up against. The action is a little lacking this time around, but the character work is what is important here, and that’s done well here.

In Summary
Madoka Magica: Homura’s Revenge is a fun little mini-arc that continues everything that is good about the main series. If you like Madoka Magica already, then you’ll probably enjoy this short run that revisits the characters, but it also doesn’t exactly change their longterm outlook, either. So if you were hoping for something a little more lighthearted, this might not be the place to find it. Still, it is a breezy quick read that fans of the series will get into. Recommended.
