With the successful win when it came to the first match towards becoming the Hoshiking, Moriking moves quickly to the second-round match. Tomohiro Hasegawa isn’t giving us any downtime between these events, at least at the moment, and is just moving quickly through them. Will we wrap up the four or so matches within just a few chapters or is there something bigger coming with the final match that will stretch it out before showing us where the series will go from there? Will there be a Galaxyking match as Moriking faces off against alien insects? Okay, that may actually be fun. I’ll admit it, I like the uncertainty about how Hasegawa is handling this book because it feels like it should have been spread out a lot more than it is or it should have ended already. That it’s gliding between those two positions just makes me laugh.

The match for this one takes place in a former research facility where we’re introduced to the Caucasus Beetle that just goes by the name Caucasus. He’s basically a big armored up beetle who is all about power and strength so he’s intent on winning this in a big way. The thing is, Oki wants to make up for his performance the last time around and that has him stepping up to fight Caucasus instead. Oki definitely needs the win so it’s easy enough to give him the chance to step up and as we’ve seen before he’s pretty good at a fight. The problem is that the match isn’t a brawling match but rather a poker game that involves them stripping down to their underwear first and then the winner of each hand gets to use a weapon to whack their loser in the button with the strength level of their win.

Suffice to say, it’s amusing how they managed to perv up things here just enough while still being more of a kids-oriented work. The matches are pretty much what you expect when it comes to playing poker or any other kind of card game so it’s just some back and forth before there’s an actual winner. And we know Oki needs this win so it’s doubly a given as Moriking is not a series where our leads get beaten down hard for very long. It’s a lot of fun to watch play out but you can ignore the actual cardplaying aspects of it and just go for the reactions and then the weapons being pulled for the beatdown.

In Summary:
Moriking is working about as I expected after the previous series of matches we had where things are wrapping up quickly with each fight and everyone is making a decent stand. There are no shenanigans here on the good guys’ side of things and that and its overall predictable nature makes for a fun experience overall. I like that Oki got his chance to stand tall after his previous fight and the whole butt-whacking thing just made me laugh as it felt perfect for this title that has always played a little weird when it comes to its humor in areas like this. Hopefully, the remaining two opponents will go fast and we then get an idea as to the future of this series.
