Content: (please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers):
Bone Collection has moved quickly to a really big battle with Kyubi having killed dozens, if not more, and holding Runa hostage in order to get what he’s really after. A lot of this just hasn’t landed well because we haven’t spent enough time with most of these characters to really feel it. In fact, at minimum, this feels like the kind of thing you’d get at the end of a two-cour anime series if not much later. I continue to like what Jun Kirarazaka does in terms of artwork with this series but it feels like the script has totally gotten away from them and they just wanted to get to the good stuff without actually putting in the work.

With the way the fight has gone so far it doesn’t take long for basically everyone to arrive where Kyubi is. He’s caught a little off-guard by the “disguise” that the trio wears as they burst in on a single motorcycle with a gag that just doesn’t land for me. And it turns into just a lot of back and forth chaos that culminates with Paira getting plainly pissed off about all of this. This isn’t what she wanted from this world in becoming human and she’s not going to let Kyubi get away with it. In fact, she gets so upset about the whole thing that she intends to show Kyubi exactly what her love of Kazami means and her powers cut loose to create this kind of bone-designed wedding chapel with her at the alter and everyone else in attendance. I do like that they actually remembered Rino in all of those while some of them just get classified as “others” in how Paira thinks of them.

Suffice to say, it’s an unearned wedding chapel moment.

In Summary:
I really lament the way this series has turned. I was so keen on it at the start with all of its potential and now it’s something that I almost kind of cringe when a new chapter comes out. I’m sticking with it for a bit longer, or until something new comes along to catch my eye in the magazine, I continue to like Paira and Kazami and the dynamic we have with Rino but the series is acting like it’s so much further along than it is that everything comes across as unearned and that’s hard to reconcile.
