With some teases back in March 2019 that more anime is coming for the Gintama property, we weren’t surprised last year when we learned that it’s a new feature film as they tend to do well. Details were non-existent at the time and we learned since that there’s a net special coming too that will feed into the film. Now, a short teaser trailer has landed from distributor Warner Bros. Japan that has confirmed a January 8th, 2020 debut for Gintama: The Final, which claims that this really is the end.

Details of the production are still to come.

The series comes from the manga by Hideaki Sorachi and began its animated life back in 2006, first with a 201 episode series and then with a new 64 episode series a couple of years ago. Add in numerous specials and a pair of theatrical movies and there is a lot of material for the property and plenty more to adapt as the manga has been ongoing since 2003. There are currently over seventy published volumes in Japan as well as five light novels.

Plot concept: The values of the city of Edo suddenly changed when the aliens, called Amanto, invaded. In a world where anything goes, from aliens to motorbikes and even electric trains, a man known as the last samurai clings to his unchanging spirit. His name is Gintoki Sakata, a.k.a. Odd Jobs Gin. He’s reckless and irresponsible, but somehow he does what needs to be done in his own subtle way. The lifestyles of Gin and his companions will make you laugh, make you cry, and warm your heart!
