The Review:
Content: (please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers)
The DigiDestined barely escaped from Metaltyranomon with their lives intact. Agumon is heavily injured from his battle with Orgemon and Metaltyranomon. Ogremon showed one little act of kindness and Taichi has regret for his demise. Yamato disagrees with Taichi’s feelings about the battle. A huge disagreement occurs between Taichi and Yamato. The other DigiDestined are stun with fear and are stuck in the middle of this disagreement. It was a chance for Joe to be a leader but he couldn’t even stand up to their ferocity. Queen Mimi was begging for help and he was so helpless. By this point, I just can’t stand Taichi and Yamato’s rivalry. It’s an aspect that has been overplayed in the original season and then continuing to the Digimon Tri movies. It’s just something that doesn’t need to be repeated. Their argument ends when Agumon wakes up from his slumber.
MetalTyranomon continues his search for the DigiDestined. Koshiro creates a map of Cloud Continent and searches for possibilities for where the Holy Children are being kept. He uses Orgemon clue to narrow down the possibilities to one. Koshiro also devises a plan for Taichi and Agumon to defeat Metaltyranomon. Koshiro is wonderful as a behind the scenes player.
Taichi and Agumon serve as a distraction while the others get away from Metaltyranomon. There are some scenes where Agumon is drawn looking freakishly and a bit disturbing. Taichi and Greymon battle with Metaltyranomon according to Koshiro’s plan. But its no avail as Metaltyranomon strength is too much. Greymon gets beaten a couple of times but stands back up each time making for a great fight. Taichi and Greymon’s courage cause Greymon to digivolve to Metalgreymon. Metalgreymon turns the tables and makes quick work of MetalTyranomon.
The other Digidestined are unable to take the straight path to the Holy Digimon because of dark miasma. Mimi takes one of Joe’s study book and throws it to dark miasma to check how dangerous it is. I would be gone to make a scene of Joe having a fit. They must find another path to get to their destination. This causes them to take two paths and having to split up. Yamato does an excellent job of bringing the mood down as he says one side will at least survive this journey.
In Summary:
Greymon’s digivolution to Metalgretmon was outstandingly beautiful. It occurs at a moment where it feels like it was a natural progression for Taichi and Greymon. Metalgreymon’s digivolution also brings a new insert song, X-Treme Flight. It creates a wonderful mood to go with the fight. I wonder if this song will be used for other Ultimate Digivolutions. I do wish this series would forget about the Taichi and Yamato rivalry and find something else to focus on. It’s been overdone and it needs to move on. Maybe it’s doing to keep the history alive and it wants to introduce this aspect to new viewers of the Digimon franchise. It’s great for new viewers but a bit off to viewers familiar with the series.
