Originally serialized in Comic Kairakuten from the October 2018 installment, Summer Shower is a twelve-page story from creator Reco, who has a little over a dozen other works on the service. I had checked out one of their stories recently as my first exposure to them and enjoyed it a whole lot. I’m still being selective in what I’m looking for with them in college-level and up, so that limits me a bit with their works. But they’ve got a good amount in that range that are pretty enjoyable. While I’ve mostly done their longer stories, this one clocking in at twelve pages made for something that gets to the point more quickly and it was interesting to see how they handle that in comparison. The end result is largely positive.
The story introduces us to Rino and Asagi, a young couple that’s been dating for at least a little bit. She’s waiting for him to pick her up for their date at the curb but the date may be in trouble from the start. With it raining out, that’s nixed a lot of the options that Asagi had in mind once she climbs into the car and they catch up on things. Asagi does come up with some other ideas, such as karaoke, because he really wants to spend the day with her. But she wants to spend time in a quieter space with him and in just one room in particular, which leads him to awkwardly asking if she means a love hotel. Oh, she does. She does indeed, though she acknowledges this a bit shyly.
Though it’s just twelve pages, the story moves quickly into the intimacy as she can’t even wait until the hotel as they’ve apparently been experimenting for several days in a row now. The time in the car is brief but for fans of that particular fetish it plays out well with Rino. The hotel works similar kinds of things where he reminds her that she doesn’t have to be as restrained as she might be elsewhere and the two have a lot of fun in this context as well. It’s all straightforward vanilla interactions but the curiosity that we get out of Rino is solid and Asagi is more than ready to do what he can to help make her happy. With the designs for it and some good bits included with the hotel room itself, as well the car, Reco uses it all to enhance the situations and make them even more exciting even while still vanilla.
In Summary
Summer Shower is a pretty straightforward piece overall that handles its twelve pages well to deliver two main scenes while still having it not feel rushed at all. The big draw are the character designs and Rino is well-handled here and there’s a good enthusiasm to everything even while including some shy elements to it as well. It’s a good looking chapter that hits that quick desire just right. Reco’s definitely got a lot going for them and I’m excited to explore more of it, though more interested in their longer stories that can really build character material.
