The summer TV season here and boy am I feeling bland. A lot of what I’ve been watching has been catch-up with my eldest daughter or I’ve found myself just digging into some sitcom material from a decade ago to kind of clear my mind.

While not a TV series, we did check out the debut of Palm Springs on Hulu recently and had stupid fun with The Kissing Booth 2.

This week had me finishing off Counterpart and I’m so glad it showed up on Amazon. The first season was amazing but I was concerned with the second season because it wasn’t renewed. Thankfully, it didn’t feel rushed but they built things so that you got what felt like a satisfying ending to the series with an open-ended aspect that could be explored if it got picked up elsewhere or some other avenue was explored. Those who love parallel world works will like this one.

I also started back on the most recent season of Young Justice as I just had a hard time connecting with it earlier this year. I’m enjoying it because I like the characters but it really feels like it needs to coalesce around the “big idea” for the season with a sense or purpose.

Sadly, I continue to hold off on the second seasons of Doom Patrol and Umbrella Academy because my viewing partner isn’t around right now.

That said, I fell into some guilty pleasure stuff this week. I love a lot of slice of life and simple drama material in the anime world and I’m admittedly more selective on that when it comes to live-action. But I really enjoyed the first season of the already renewed Sweet Magnolias. I was a big fan of Joanna Garcia Swisher from Better With You and she leads a solid ensemble here that works well as it deals with small-town South Carolina drama. What helps is that events are not dragged out for the entire season but rather often dealt with within an episode or two at most, so it allows for a lot of variety and some good generation elements as well.

What are you watching?
