What They Say:

Anos Voldigord was a tyrannical Demon King that eradicated humans, spirits, and even the gods, but became bored of eternal warfare and reincarnated with dreams of a peaceful world. However, what awaited him in reincarnation after 2000 years were descendants who became too weak after being accustomed to peace, and all sorts of magic that deteriorated to the extreme. Anos enters Demon King Academy that gathers and educates those who are viewed as the reincarnation of the Demon King, but the academy could not see through his powers and ends up branding him as a misfit.

Two thousand years ago during the Mythical Age, the Demon King of Tyranny destroyed all he saw before him, even the gods themselves, but now two hundred years after his death it is said the Founder will awaken within Delsgade, among a new Generation of Chaos who now attend the Demon King Academy to prove themselves worthy of that title. But on the day of the entrance exam, a young girl named Misha is tentatively walking up the long path leading to the entrance hall, with children of demon royalty complaining for the need to take this ridiculous test to prove themselves, with one rudely bumping into her and not apologizing or acknowledging his fault. As she drops a letter that was cradled within her hands, many people coldly walk by and do not attempt to lend a hand until a self-assured boy picks it up and returns it, after reading her name on the envelope. While this new pair’s parents and guardian cheer on for their success, one of those pompous royals named Zepes greets them at the main gates, callously mocking as to this overly affectionate goodbye. Although when they walk by and ignore his obvious taunts, he immediately loses his temper and dares to burn them alive with a seemingly impressive spell, unless they bow down to his superiority. But the cool-headed teenager returns the insult and continues on his way, provoking an heir of the Indus family to carry out his threat, to which his flame is easily blown out and he is curiously forced to apologize for his difficult behavior. However, when the practical skills tests begin, this black-haired boy must now face his newly minted rival in a gladiatorial arena where they are able to only win if the opponent submits or is no longer able to fight. With Zepes now wearing anti-demonic armor, the contest seems to be overwhelmingly in his favor, and yet the calm and confident boy easily wins with devastating magical power.

Due to his immense magical power, the boy now known as Anos Voldigord is proclaimed as a misfit, since only descendants of the founding ancestor are allowed to attend Demon King Academy, but as signaled by his and Misha’s white uniforms, they are not considered of pure blood and both are further labeled as a mongrel or hybrid. But as he considers where he made mistakes in the entrance exams, Anos asks his friend for the Demon King’s name – to which she mentally replies as Avos Dilhevia, an obvious change of his own and the true name of the resurrected ruler. And yet as class starts and the instructor asks for volunteers to become team leaders, with the only exception they must be able to cast Troop Magic Gyze, Voldigord immediately raises his hand, much to the surprise of his fellow classmates. Once the teacher points out someone of his standing may not become a commander, he confidently interjects all he needs to prove is hybrids are not inferior to demon royalty, to which she reacts by coldly stating if he is wrong then he must sincerely apologize and be expelled from the school. Without hesitating, Anos swiftly points out a flaw within the magical diagram and makes a quick adjustment, to which it effectively doubles the spell’s output. Now unable to object to his qualifications, the professor approves his rank tells the new leaders to introduce themselves, with a confident girl in the front curtsying and declaring her name as the Witch of Destruction Sasha Necron, to which Misha confirms she is her older sister, although their costumes are different designating one is a purebred and she is not. As the students chose which group they wish to join, his friend is the only one with him, after which the callous sibling walks over and mocks that a junk doll, or someone created by magic with no soul of her own, is the only one willing to be his teammate. Once again he ignores this attempt to make fun of his companion and Sasha storms off, then to greeted at the main gate by her where she announces they will compete to see who is better at the team competition one week from now, with the loser willingly joining the other’s group. Seeing no problem with the terms, Anos boldly states he will win, and thus they prepare for what will become a no holds barred contest of will and magic.

With the sisters now settling their differences, the three friends sit together in class as the instructor states that due to the Demon King being expected to arise this year, one of the Seven Elder Demon Emperors will give a special lecture on Great Magic to prepare for this event, and after warning Anos to behave himself, introduces the speaker as Lord Ivis Necron. However as the imposing figure strides down the aisle to begin his lesson, Voldigord boldly greets him and asks if he knows who he is, to which this subordinate states he recalls no one of that name, but admits his memories from two thousand years ago have been lost. Much to the amazement of everyone, the confident boy lays his hand upon the face of the revered man and notices nothing which he sees as familiar, only the fake name of the imposter superimposed over his own. After class is over, the teacher brings the assembled to Demon Palace Delsgade to which they will participate in a new exercise, with each group earning points by finding magical relics secreted within the location, all to be turned over to their team leader. However as the others rush ahead to find the best treasures, Anos calmly states if they can find the scepter on the lowest level, it will earn them a perfect score, but Sasha irritatingly points out no one, not even their professors have been to that location, and the truth behind such an item even existing may all be but a fable. And yet Anos insists the Demon King’s staff is there, for, after all, this is his castle.

As her betraying sister escapes with the scepter, Misha is forced to confess to her friend the truth behind her existence: at midnight of her fifteenth birthday, which is tonight, she will disappear since she never existed. Anos immediately understands the bitter statement and declares she was originally Sasha, recalling how the sister was easily able to dissolve the magical pact the siblings forged during the first team competition, which should be impossible unless both sides were the same person. The girl then explains originally she was part of the same fetus who shared the same soul, but Ivis cast a spell to split them into two in order to create a more powerful demon race. However do as the poor girl contemplates her life coming to an end, she calmly declares she wants to live, but fate is working against her and there is nothing she can do to stop what is to come by merging back into a single girl named Sasha. However even though no one acknowledged she lived since her life was considered a mockery, Misha is happy she was able to live for fifteen years, and it was made even better when Anos spoke to her and became her friend, and as such a miracle happened. After the pensive victim voices her regrets and happiness, Voldigord declares he has never had regrets or considered anything impossible, and thus he will make Misha’s desire come true.

In Summary:

After watching the first episode of this fearless series, with a main protagonist who is understandably too confident due to his overwhelming power and knowledge, I thought it might be unlikely that The Misfit of Demon Academy would not be able to survive due to its bold premise and littering of comical circumstances caused by the embodiment of the Demon King of Tyranny Anos Voldigord. And yet as you become accustomed to his daring proclamations backed by a self-assured attitude which proves to be contagious, one cannot but be engendered by this overbearing student, proving to all who will listen he always knows what is best since he is the Founder himself. Although the underlying mystery as to who changed his legacy is intriguing, it is the friendships he develops with the Necron sisters which makes the show all the more heartwarming, especially as this character arc comes to a welcomed close. I will admit I cried throughout the latest episode as Misha began to accept her fate in vanishing, plus it made the story all the more woeful once Sasha unveiled the truth behind her betrayal, with each sibling wanting to save the other. And yet with the admirable resolve we saw in the past of Anos wishing to save his people from more suffering, which was amplified after he struck the same chord in trying to understand this new life and people, it appears this show has more to reveal than just amusing moments brought about by the antics of one grandiose former ruler.
