Junji Ito’s ‘Uzumaki’ Anime Gets Bumped To 2021

2 min read
The horror side of anime tends to not get a lot of attention but when it comes to Junji Ito, lots of attention is paid.

Junji Ito’s works have a new project that’s in the pipeline with an anime TV adaptation of Uzumaki, which was scheduled to be done as a four-episode event piece miniseries in 2020. It’s got Hiroshi Nagahama of Mushi-shi directing with Studio Drive animating while Production I.G. and Adult Swim are co-producing, as it’ll get distribution in the US before Japan. Even more intriguing to some will be that Colin Stetson of Hereditary is coming on board to compose the music.

As part of the weekend of announcements that came out for a lot of properties, Adult Swim dropped a new promo for the series that’s exactly the same as before but now reveals a 2021 debut date. This isn’t too much of a surprise as the cascade of changes because of the COVID-19 pandemic in scheduling and availability was bound to affect this as well. Adult Swim also brought out a new 13-minute interview with the director from their larger run of panels to check out below.

The newly announced cast includes:

  • Toshio Furukawa as Kirie’s Father
  • Takashi Matsuyama as Shuichi’s Father
  • Mika Doi as Yukie Saito
  • Mariya Ise as Azami Kurotami
  • Katsutoshi Matsuzaki as Katayama
  • Wataru Hatano as Okada
  • Tatsumaru Tachibana as Tsumura
  • Kouichi Toochika as Yokota

Plot Concept: Kurozu-cho, a small fog-bound town on the coast of Japan, is cursed. According to Shuichi Saito, the withdrawn boyfriend of teenager Kirie Goshima, their town is haunted not by a person or being but by a pattern: uzumaki, the spiral, the hypnotic secret shape of the world.

It manifests itself in everything from seashells and whirlpools in water to the spiral marks on people’s bodies, the insane obsessions of Shuichi’s father and the voice from the cochlea in our inner ear. As the madness spreads, the inhabitants of Kurozu-cho are pulled ever deeper into a whirlpool from which there is no return!
