WIT Studio brought out their big new project this summer with Great Pretender with its June 2nd, 2020 debut. Interestingly, Netflix released it in batches with five episodes on the 2nd and 9th and then four on the 16th. The remaining episodes will be set for a date later. Each batch corresponds to a case within the show. While the fourth case is still listed as coming soon in Japan, the overseas side has now been set with an August 20th, 2020 debut now popping up on many international pages for people. The show is planned for a twenty-three episode run so there’s a bit more to come in the future beyond this initial batch of sixteen completed episodes.

The series is directed by Hiro Kaburagi based on the scripts from Ryota Kosawa. Yoshiyuki Sadamoto is on the character designs and Hirotaka Kato is serving as the chief animation director along with Kyoji Asano.

The Japanese cast includes:

  • Chiaki Kobayashi as Makoto “Edamame” Edamura
  • Junichi Suwabe as Laurent Thierry
  • Natsumi Fujiwara as Abigail “Aby” Jones
  • Mie Sonozaki as Paula Dickins

Check out the official site and Twitter.

Plot Concept: Makoto Edamura is supposedly Japan’s greatest swindler. Together with his partner Kudo, they try to trick a Frenchman in Asakusa but unexpectedly get tricked instead. The Frenchman, whom they tried to swindle, turns out to be Laurent Thierry- a much higher-level ‘confidence man,’ in control of the mafias. Edamura is yet to find out what fate awaits him, after having engaged in the Frenchman’s dirty jobs…!
