What They Say
The four pillars supporting life in the Turtle Realm – fire, wind, water, and thunder – are under threat from General Uro’s army. Mel and her guardian, Ruka, remain imprisoned in the castle of Captain Acidulous. To rescue Mel and protect the pillars, Naomi, Doug, and Jim must dive deep into the Oritsa Ocean and join forces with the Aqami People.

The Review:
Content:
Now that all Blue Star Warriors have their Guardian Spirit powers, a new arc begins: the battle over the pillars of the Turtle Realm. At this point, our main characters have very much settled into this fantasy world. Doug, Jim, and Naomi readily accept the charge given them by the Turtle Realm tribes and indeed take the initiative in laying out a battle plan to protect the pillars (rather impressive for three kids from a suburb, although they do have the help of spirits). Meanwhile, Mel takes her place among Acidulous’ minions and receives the visions sent to her from Ruka without questioning what’s happening to her.

The series continues to deliver battles one after the other, but the main things keeping the plot interesting are Mel and Satorin. Despite the girls’ huge clash in Volume 3, it is unclear where Mel’s (and Ruka’s) loyalty actually lies. The story also hints at a potential Mel/Acidulous attraction, as improbable as that sounds. As for Satorin, he’s taken a backseat to the Earth humans over the last couple volumes, but now everyone’s curious as to what he is exactly. With the introduction of an Uro Satorin-like double, I anticipate he’ll be key to the outcome of the fight over the remaining Turtle Realm pillars.

In Summary:
Uro’s out to destroy the four pillars of the Turtle Realm, and despite the combined efforts of that world’s tribes and their Blue Star warrior allies, Uro’s well on his way to getting what he wants. Vermonia continues to bring on the action with two more battles but now adds a bit of intrigue with Mel’s true intentions towards her former friends unclear.
