“Chapter Twenty-Six – Dreamlike World”

What They Say:

Avid bookworm and college student Motosu Urano ends up dying in an unforeseen accident. This came right after the news that she would finally be able to work as a librarian like she had always dreamed of. When she regains consciousness. She was reborn as Myne, the daughter of a poor soldier. She was in the town of Ehrenfest, which has a harsh class system. But as long as she had books, she really didn’t need anything else. However, books were scarce and belonged only to the nobles. But that doesn’t stop her, so she makes a decision … “If there aren’t any books, I’ll just create some.”

Content (please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers):

After the doubt which Schicioza has placed within the knight order’s collective mind of Myne being an unsuitable priestess, Ferdinand leads the group to the barren depression left behind after their destruction of the mature trombe. But as they soar through the sky on his crystal steed, the Head Priest uncharacteristically gives his young apprentice an inspirational speech, declaring she should prove to the assembled she is worthy of wearing her blue robes. However as they arrive at the decimated scar in the land, this daunting leader commands the insolent soldier who maliciously harmed his charge to instead perform the healing ritual, to which he has no choice than to obey. Yet as he chants the prayer to cleanse the area, his mana reserves are sorely inadequate to completely purify the horrible crater, but even after much chiding from Ferdinand to continue his pitiful performance, the disgraced man collapses after being drained of all magic. Infuriated by his failure to prove his egocentric superiority, the Head Priest calls forth Myne to continue the ceremony, but as the knight order watch with doubt this small girl supporting a looming staff and beginning her chant, they are remarkably surprised as she effortlessly completes the purification with little struggle, allowing Ferdinand stating in his usual tone she may have overdone it.

After returning to the Noble Gate, Ferdinand asks Myne if she has anything to demand of the knight order, even though he cautiously gives her a sideways glance as if to warn not to say anything too embarrassing, but the small girl of course declares she requires something of the commander. With a pout on her depressed face, the apprentice requests Karstedt to have her special robes replaced in time for the Dedication Ceremony, and also to place the order with Gilberta Company. But more importantly, the offended priestess asks that Damuel be given leniency due to his defense during Schicioza’s assault, to which the leader obligingly states the punishment will be handled internally. With the exhausting day finally over, Lutz arrives in time to escort his friend back home, but due to overtaxing her mana reserves, Myne unfortunately spends the next few days recovering in bed, only to return to the church to a distressed Fran. Her head retainer informs his mistress the Head Priest has summoned her to his office for an unknown reason, which only becomes more worrisome as he wastes no time in escorting the troublesome girl back into the private chamber which she has seen far too many times … always leading to a lecture due to her eccentric antics.

In Summary:

It is surprising and disappointing to realize this season has ended on a bittersweet note: allowing Ferdinand to finally witness Urano’s secret life, just as we saw in the opening scene of the premier last year, but also sadly permitting Myne to now fully appreciate her new family, only to apologize after remembering she has to leave once winter starts. While she may have the knight order now backing her acceptance as a priestess, one cannot forget the underlying hatred other nobles have for a commoner being permitted to wear blue robes. It is this toxic atmosphere which made this season both a pleasure to watch with her numerous accomplishments, but also sincerely depressing due to all of the setbacks these jealous aristocrats placed in Myne’s way. Hopefully with the next season we will be able to celebrate more joyous rewards, but with the manner by which this finale closed, it seems Urano’s problems have only begun.
