I had no idea what to expect going into this story but I was pretty damn charmed by it through and through.

Originally serialized in Comic Kairakuten from the June 2020 installment, Nanaman is a twenty-four-page story from creator Tsugumi Suzuma, who has just a couple of other works on the service. I definitely like checking out a creator when they have only a few works as it’s getting in on the ground floor if they last and sometimes there’s that burst of creativity from the first stories that are just the best. This one made for an easy check-in since it didn’t involve the high school set and coming in at this page count meant some pretty good story material being included in it that helps to really build a connection.

The premise is a really fun one that’s likely happened to varying degrees in real life. We’re introduced to a young man who we know by his gamer name of Rush. He’s excited about the esports event that he’s going to tomorrow with his friend Nanaman that he plays online with but hasn’t met before. The two definitely click in gaming and chat and he’s fully aware that she’s a woman, but part of him doesn’t quite believe it. Especially as she’s about a decade older than him. But when they do meet, and spend the day together, it becomes clear that he’s pretty taken by her. Being hentai, she doesn’t look much older than him overall but we see how she carries herself youthfully in a way and there’s a playfulness in her attitude because of her comfort level with him from all their gaming. When they end up in a karaoke booth later she’s ready to start in on some boardgames since neither actually karaokes and there’s obviously no gaming.

What’s intriguing is that as things heat up between the two and it’s incredibly awkward between them at this moment, she reveals that for several different reasons, she’s not often seen as a woman and is surprised that Rush is actually into her. In fact, she went so far as to pad her bra in order to seem more womanly and play up the part because she didn’t expect anything to happen, especially with the age difference. This leads into things becoming more intense as she reveals these things about herself and as the two engage very intimately. It’s definitely appealing as Suzuma’s artwork is really strong here with great line work and designs overall, and beautiful eyes throughout. The settings play well into the story too which definitely helps but there’s a good bit of intensity and eroticism to the back half of the chapter that helps it to really click.

In Summary
I had no idea what to expect going into this story but I was pretty damn charmed by it through and through. Suzuma has the page count to make sure that we connect with these characters and we definitely do. It’s easy to want more of this to see how their relationship goes, especially with the age difference, as it offers up all sorts of possibilities for storytelling. The work is pretty great throughout here and it delivers on all fronts, making for a very enjoyable experience and one that feels surprisingly fulfilling, which you can’t always say about hentai.
