Bone Collection has been playing pretty strong for me since the start as it introduced a lot of interesting groundwork that hooked me pretty well. It’s also one that’s ramping up some of its ideas pretty quickly, which has me a little wary, but it’s doing things in a way that could be interesting. Kazami’s already got a big target on him because of the special skill that he uses which isn’t allowed so it’s no surprise that people are aware of it and it’s going to be problematic as they’re going to try and catch him using it. And that spells trouble for Paira as well since they’re not exactly going to let a yokai with her rank hang around just eating food and chilling.

With the mission set to go after an A-rank yokai, it’s just Rino and Kazami that are doing it as Kazami has set up Paira with a ton of food to try and more coming. She’s not exactly a glutton but she’s enjoying discovering what humanity has to offer. But she’s also not stupid and has brought a bunch with her to watch Kazami and Rino because she flat out doesn’t trust Rino. And for good reason as Rino is close to Kazami and she’s applying pressure here over his “niece” and their relationship but also his use of the spell. She’s a bit of an information dump with some of her dialogue here in explaining the larger situation of the world but you can imagine Kazami being a bit oblivious to it as to why it gets talked about and why she has to say it to him directly.

Of course, this is when a bunch of A-rank Oni show up and start causing trouble which puts Rino and Kazami together trying to stay alive with some creativity. And for him to use his ability because Paira actually did show up. Amusingly, she’s only directly in his view because she just escaped Abe who staged the whole thing to draw her out and capture her but also to see Kazami use the forbidden spell for himself so he can put him on the execution list. Basically, the trio walked right into his trap with ease and then some. I expect things to shift based on how it’s all playing out as I don’t imagine Kazami dead in the next chapter or two but I like how it’s essentially putting the three of them in the same defensive position while also creating a split as Kazami is taking up her powers – at the worst time for her – in order to protect Rino.

In Summary:
I’m continuing to enjoy this series a lot but this installment is a shift from the previous couple of chapters. It’s a bit more densely packed in the layouts and by putting Kazami and Rino out on a mission there’s some separation going on that feels off. Paira’s got a reduced role and even visually she’s not all that striking and doesn’t stand out much here – which makes sense since she’s hiding, but it still feels off. I do like seeing what Abe is doing and wondering what’s going to happen to either allow this or provide for some other kind of change in the nature of events. There’s a good sense that this is a change moment and Kazami’s going to be someone that they’re all lucky to have.
