The Review:
Content: (please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers)
The opening episode of this series smacked me silly with what it did, even knowing how Mari Yamazaki was basically playing with/spoofing her own Thermae Romae work with the whole bringing someone from the past into the present. But it delivered on the laughs and wackiness and has me easily back for more. Demetrius is amused to see that a piece of his pottery is out on the shelf but the homeowner shits on it for being so terrible, making him feel bad. Such begins the group dynamic as some of the grandkids arrive too and they opt to just show him some of Tokyo, which includes field day activities that are going on. That has him thinking of the Olympics but we’re just going to see how disappointed he is by what a real field day is like compared to the feats of strength of the past.
In Summary:
It’s fun to watch as we see the events unfold and the horror that Demetrius feels from it but also how he accidentally gets involved and ends up winning a prize himself. Considering the nature of what they’re like in his time and how cutthroat they are, finding that the future has them set so that people can just enjoy them really makes him feel good. Of course, the one thing he thinks shouldn’t be changed is that they shouldn’t be wearing clothes while competing because that’s how the real Olympics are. It’s cute and silly and we get a shift back in time that puts a new threat on his plate that will make things a lot of fun next time around.
