Originally serialized in Weekly Kairakuten from the Januray 2020 installment, First Day of Winter is a sixteen-page story from creator Aoi Miharu, who has just a bit over twenty other works on the service. I had made sure after my last experience to double-check the tags here to ensure it’s not a shota piece and they generally seemed to be pretty solid tags. What drew me to Miharu’s work originally was the design of the character because it has a really rough and raw edge to it, very angular and unclean for lack of a better word. Especially in contrast to other illustrators that definitely work the curves. What we get here is very distinctive because of the style and it ends up carrying a particular intensity into the actual flow of the story as well.

With the first encounter having gone well for Yamamoto, though it was all basically foreplay, the two have now found themselves in the shower for the moment with a chance to clean up. But this is where Yuzuki learns that Yamamoto is a virgin and she can’t believe it considering his age. While he’s naturally defensive in an honest kind of way, she shifts gears and essentially offers herself to him to do anything he’s ever wanted to do. Thankfully, Yamamoto isn’t a huge fetishist so it doesn’t devolve to bondage, candles, or other instruments like some titles might. It’s actually a good bit vanilla but therein lies its charms. Just having the two of them pressed up against each other for a bit, flesh to flesh, it lets him enjoy the sensation that he’s craved for so long. And while she may be a bit raw in spirit she’s smooth and subtle enough in this moment to just let him enjoy the experience without forcing things.

Thankfully, she does take things further with him as this storyline ends in this chapter as she climbs on top of him and lets him experience the full thing. Again, like the time just prior to that, she’s not hugely forceful about it – she does pick up a little natural speed along the way – and lets him just enjoy the experience. She does want a little out of him in regards to how he feels and what he thinks about it and he’s having a hard time with words, but it’s enjoyable to watch him process the moment and then realize just how much more he wants. It’s not a tender sequence between the two but it’s one that has some good empathy and enjoyment without it falling into some dark and disturbing material or something with a bit more weirdness to it than it needs.

In Summary
With this being somewhat related to another storyline involving the Paco character that Yuzuki seems to know at the end here, there’s always a chance we’ll see more of these characters at some point. But if not, we have a really fun two-chapter story from Aoi Miharu. I really like their style of artwork with its roughness with the line work and just the expressiveness of the characters so it’s definitely appealing. But I also like that we get something that in a weird way feels a little honest as it builds a connection between a couple of people for an evening. It’s an easy one to recommend if you’re looking for something a little simple but with some heart to it.
