The Hatena Illusion anime series is one of those quiet works that didn’t get much attention during its winter 2020 broadcast and simulcast. The show has its twelfth and final episode coming up on Thursday, or rather did have it coming up as the official site has revealed that it’s being delayed indefinitely. No reason was given for the delay but it’s pretty much expected to be related to the COVID-19 crisis and production issues.

Funimation has been streaming the series and producing a simuldub for it.

Shin Matsuo is directing based on the scripts by Tatsuya Takahashi. Yuizu Nakano is working on the character designs with Children’s Playground Entertainment handling the animation production.

The Japanese cast includes Yoshitsugu Matsuoka as Makoto Shiranui, Aina Suzuki as Kana Hoshisato, Miyu Tomita as Yumemi Hoshisato, M.A.O as Emma Sakurai, Takashi Matsuyama as Jeeves Wodehouse, Yoshimasa Hosoya as Mamoru Hoshisato., Yoshino Nanjō as Mabe Hoshisato, Satomi Arai as Mariah Grene, amd Sumire Uesaka as Kokomi Kikyōin.

Liyuu will perform the opening theme song “Magic Words” while Aina Suzuki is performing the ending theme song “Hikari Iro no Uta.”

The original work comes from writer Tomohiro Matsu with illustrator Kentarou Yabuki that began in 2014 and released its fourth volume in late 2015 before Matsu passed away in May of 2016.

Plot concept: Ever since watching a magic show held by him and his wife Maeve, Makoto Shiranui has always admired Mamoru Hoshisato—a world-class magician, as well as friend of his parents—and came to Tokyo to become his apprentice. Kana, nicknamed Hatena, is the couple’s daughter and his childhood friend. As the hustle and bustle activities in Tokyo catches Makoto off guard such as burglaries by a beautiful thief, he depends on Hatena’s comforting side. When he came to Hoshisato’s now-haunted mansion to reunite with his childhood friend, he is greeted by the family’s butler and maid, Jeeves and Emma along with Hatena, only to discover that they are not as compatible anymore.
